United Way Worldwide is #1 on The Chronicle of Philanthropy's new list of America's Favorite Charities. This ranking of the top 100 charities is based on cash support — the total value of money and stock received as gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations. The Chronicle of Philanthropy focused exclusively on cash and stock because that money comes directly from individuals. It excludes government grants, donated products, and contributions to donor-advised funds. This report represents a new approach from the Philanthropy 400, which was their previous ranking.
From the article: "By focusing solely on the fundraising of cause-driven nonprofits, the Chronicle’s new ranking provides insights into the trends affecting donations by individuals from all walks of life and the growing importance of foundation gifts to charities. It also offers a more detailed financial picture of the organizations that are the best at fundraising. The ranking is based on a group’s cash support — the total value of money and stock it received as gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations. It excludes government grants, donated products, and contributions to donor-advised funds."
